I feel like this quote perfectly answers the question of why goal setting is important.
"The trouble with not having a goal is that you can spend your life running up and down the field and never score."
Without goals, we will spend our whole lives running around, yet never "scoring". You get one life, as cliche as that sounds. But really, you get ONE. What do you want to accomplish with that one life? What would you like to do, or achieve, or become?
You can't accomplish your goals if you never set any. Start by deciding exactly what it is you want. Once you have decided what it is you want, then you can find success.
But, what if you have set goals (lot's of them in fact), but never seem to be able to accomplish them? There might be a reason for that (or 8 hah). Below I am going to share exactly what could be holding you back from accomplishing your goals AND some tips on how to fix it.
TIP 1. STOP WAITING FOR LATER. START NOW.
One reason you might not be accomplishing your goals is because you simply haven't started. You might find yourself waiting for the "perfect" moment to start. You may be telling yourself, "I'll get working on it tomorrow." Well guess what darling, today is yesterday's tomorrow. By putting of starting you aren't moving forward. Start today. Start right now. Whether you feel ready or not, get going.
TIP 2. STOP COMPARING
Maybe you have started (or thought about starting), but you get so caught up in what other people are doing or what other people have accomplished. You might feel inferior or think there is no way you could do what they do. And you may be right. You might not be able to (and quite honestly shouldn't) do exactly what they do. You should do what YOU do. Stop comparing. Your success will likely look different from their success, and not only is that okay, it's actually a GOOD thing. Also, keep in mind, their success is not your failure. You do you. Be so focused on watering your own grass that you don't have time to see if theirs is greener. CLICK TO TWEET.
TIP 3. PLAN FOR YOUR SUCCESS
This one should be a no-brainer... In order to accomplish our goals, we need to make a plan on HOW we will be accomplishing them. There is no way you can achieve your goals if you do not make a plan on how you will achieve them. If you have skimped on the planning stage that might be the reason you haven't been able to accomplish your goals. Take some time and really map out your success plan.
TIP 4. MAKE ADJUSTMENTS
Sometimes goals that seem like a good idea at the time, might not actually be goals worth working for. Take a look at your goals and really decide if they are things you really want. If not, the likelihood of you accomplishing them is quite slim. Make adjustments where needed.
TIP 5. BE REALISTIC
Big goals can be good goals, but if they are impossible and unrealistic, then instead of promoting growth, they might just keep you at a standstill. When goals are too difficult to achieve it can cause frustration, leading us to feeling hopeless and eventually giving up. Make your goals big enough that they stretch you, but not too big that they break you. CLICK TO TWEET.
TIP 6. KEEP A JOURNAL
By keeping a journal and writing down your goals while keeping track of your successes (and even failures) you will be more likely to accomplish your goals. This journal will serve as a permanent record of your progress and will help you evaluate how you are or can be more successful. There is also a sense of accountability when you write things down. It makes it real. Go out there and get yourself a cute journal or notebook to keep track of your progress. Below are a few of our favorites.
TIP 7. MAKE MOVES
Don't get stuck in the "planning" stages of goal setting. While yes, planning is important (like we discussed above), the plan is only effective when put into practice. Make your move. Get going. Don't wait.
TIP 8. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF
One of the biggest reasons you might not be accomplishing your goals is that you simply don't believe you can. Get out of your own head. Stop standing in your own way. You've got all that it takes. Don't give up. Keep working at it. You've got this!
The most important thing you can remember when it comes to goal setting and accomplishing your goals is that progress is progress. While you might not be moving forward at the pace you want, don't become discouraged. Forward is forward. Becoming discouraged can cause us to quit or give up. As long as you are moving forward that is what really counts.
Keep believing in yourself. Remember how capable you are. The only person who can limit your greatness is you. NEVER be that person. Never get in your own way. YOU GOT THIS!
